Pre-analysing the Site

Source: Bureau of Meteorology
These two rose wing diagrams show the major wind direction in Sydney happened in summer. We can find the wind mainly comes from southwest side.

By using google earth the current site with project 3 that the longitude is 151°13'24.06" East and the latitude is  33°52'18.45" South. When inout the suntool software we can easily to define how the solar gain and where the window we gonna put.

The Final of Project 2 with References

Sorry about the poor presentation on Tuesday

The detail model shows the relationship between outside forest and inside columns.

This massive one presents the courtyard as the center of villa which is indicates the most interest element in the building.

The colors highlight the different utility of the building, for blue one is to present transition point for connecting the other side of the building, the green one presents the working space for host and the red presents the private area such as bedroom. The transparent block shows the public use.

I chose circulation, geometric shape and materiality to define Villa Mairea.
Circulation:
Function and Layouts: Alvato he designed for his client a semi-private area for them to live. The blue shading in ground floor is for transition which can be accessed to every other part of building. The architect he wanna devide the space for client who can have an enough private area to live, therefore the stair to first floor especially for the bedroom area, he just designed one stair for connecting the ground floor and  bedroom of first floor. The courtyard can be treated as a centre which can swap information between its main body sauna. This layout can bring a semi-private for the client.

The Way of Movement:
For level one, the most activities are happened in the main part which is entry hall. The entry hall just as show above, it is a transition point that every part can use it to arrive. This relationship is tight.

"Silence" Area Vs "Lively" Area:
As the diagram shown above, the red is presented as silence area which is divided by the transition point. The level 1 is the most lively area while the second floor is most for lively, this is good for protecting the  privacy away from guests and maids

Geometric Shapes:
From the plan, we can draw a conclusion that the architect he used several L shapes to be the whole main body for the architecture, this can be very well to protect away form outside activity which can not be disturbed easily. The element outside such as the vertical slat is arranged as curve which can be found in its surrounding context-contour lines. The pond and the vertical slats can enhance the ample shapes of the architecture.

Material Utility
Finland is a norther European nation of large resource of timber, copper, stone and other natural things.Alvato he used to retreat to nature traditional in Finland-the nature resources. So the interior structures like window framing and columns, are both wooden to be contrasting the outside forest. The handle shown above is made by copper, and the fire place and outside enclosure are all made from stone and marble, which is extracting the materials in local market.

The Process of Project 2

ARCH1201-Design Studio 3-Project1-Gehry House Santa Monica

Gehry's house is a renovated one which rebuilt in 1978.  Centrally the house is consist of two part which the old one is the original bugalow and the new one is other extension around the house.
The house is made for people moving through it and living inside. Ghery uses circulating paths through space to creat ares of rest and movement within or through space.
The transition from semi-private to private spaces is apparent with circulation paths terminating in a space. He is also handeled with the utilization of stairs to upper private spaces.Stairs are to be used for separating the new and old space. The transition maintains its spatial relation to one another with the rare plane staying below the line of sight.

The original structure is conventional framed two-storey bungalow. Some interiors finished have been stripped back to reveal the structural support element within the residence. The bearing wall of interior and exterior are stud framed supporting beams, joists and rafters. The enclosure was built of most mundane materials, corrugated aluminum metal siding, plywood, glass and fencing. The rough materials they used also honestly reflcet the limited budget.

The house relates with its surrounding elements in unique ways. An opening in east wing wall produces a direct view of a large cactus. The sight angle of dinning room window allows it to be perpendicular to the street light that across the road.

Model Making Process and Finish

The model we made that we have considered the materials this house use, so we decide to use screen board and cupboard for its basic element. The 1:100 scale model is extremely small that it is very hard to cut the small stuffs. Because we use laser cut for the curve, so we have to spray the whole model.

we made it in half so it can be taken as sectional model which can clearly be seen the internal.
